From August 11, 2016

As you have probably worked out, I am back! Thanks to those I have already seen for their best wishes. Probably not surprisingly I had a great time on sabbatical.

A great big thank you to Nikki Bleyendaal for being so wonderful in the role of Head of Julius last term. It was an incredibly busy and full term and she led the House wonderfully. Nikki, I really appreciate everything that you have done.

Also, thanks to Mike O’Brien who stood in last term as an extra pair of hands to help out around Julius. A big thanks also to Pete Cooper, Dave Johnson and Gill Kilpatrick for all of their work in the House.

A few key dates are approaching that you need to keep in mind:

Please make sure that your son has submitted their subject choices for 2017 by the 19th of August. If you have any questions or queries on this please feel free to contact me. If your son is unsure what is involved in a particular subject next year please encourage them to approach the Heads of Department.

The senior examinations for Years 11, 12 and 13 will run from Monday the 22nd of August through to Friday the 26th. Please encourage your sons to begin preparation for this as they do count for derived grades. That means if something happens to your son in November these will be the grades that are used to create their grade.

Last week the Senior House Basketball took out Corfe House 30 to 22 which places them in the semi-finals. Well done to the lads, all the boys played well. It was great to see a range of ages with the Year 13s of Ben Thomson, Jon Ashcroft, Hunter McKenzie and Jack Beadel link in with the Year 11s Mitch Ball, Arthur Allen and Tom Berg.

The Table Tennis team of Simon Brown, Henry Crampton, Ben Sullivan and Charles Goodwin won their preliminary match 4-2 against Jacobs to put them through to the next round.

The Junior debating team of Harry Robson, Matt Todd and Ben Pownall narrowly lost their first debate to Richards. This week they take on Corfe House debating the merits of Pokemon Go.

In the first week of term it was great to arrive back to find the Julius House juniors in the final of Hockey. They came across a skillful Somes team which took the final out. It was great to see the work of Ben Sullivan, Zach and Jonty Gallagher, Zach May, Jack Lindo and Fergus Beadel battle it out.

Congratulations to Kynan Salt (Year 9) who took out the National Gymnastics title for Boys Open. A fantastic achievement.

We wish Christopher Brown (Year 13) well who is travelling to Russia to compete for NZ in the International Informatics Olympiad.

Here is a list of chapels until the end of term. Thanks for sending the lads along on Sunday. Please ensure that the boys get along to two for the term:

  • Sunday 14 August, 9am, Holy Eucharist (optional)
  • Sunday 21 August, 5:30pm, Evening Service (Jacobs/Somes/Richards)
  • Sunday 28 August, 9am, Holy Eucharist (optional)
